Ikea Vittsjo Hack
I am obsessed with Ikea hacks and any homeware or furniture DIYs. We desperately needed more storage, our staff arrived from London and I couldn’t bare living surrounded by boxes again. Some tim ego I came across Vittsjo hacks. It is a basic Ikea range; to me it looks like a store display furniture. I wouldn’t consider buying it for a second till I found a few projects where people spray painted them. It looked really good in gold and I LOVE gold furniture I decided to give it a go. Vittsjo bookcase is only $79 and spray pain costs about $6/7. I actually needed 3 cans of paint but overall the project costed a little bit over $100. Pretty good!
This is a very simple project, anyone can do (no previous DIY experience needed). I sprayed some parts before I assembled the bookcase but majority of spraying was done when the unit was fully assembled. I am not 100% convinced it was the right way to do it. I wanted to get a super smooth finish and in my head this was the best way. It needed a good few layers of paint, hence 3 cans used. Also entire apartment was covered in gold/yellow dust. I am not joking! I must have vacuumed cleaned at least 3 times to get rid of it.
Bottom and top shelves were originally white but I was going for a bit more dramatic and upscale look so I painted them black. I actually spray painted them, only because I had a matt black spray but you can use regular paint.
I would recommend spraying outside, I am pretty sure significant number of my brain was killed by the fumes. If don’t have an outside space maybe try to spray paint before assembling to minimise mess and open all of the windows. Also remember to put on a protective mask.
